Desc: | What does it mean to think about culture as a "system" and to attempt to "model" it? This digital humanities course will equip students from a range of disciplines and technical backgrounds with a toolkit for modeling processes of cultural production, transmission, and evolution. Students will learn to analyze cultural phenomena through a systems lens; think in terms of models; and be creative about how to adapt them to new domains, including cultural studies, media ecology, literary theory, art history, sociology, cultural anthropology, and technology studies. They will develop and practice hands-on programming skills for computational modeling and simulation using NetLogo and Python and learn foundational concepts and methods used in complex systems theory, such as agent-based modeling, network analysis, information theory, genetic algorithms, and evolutionary game theory. Prior programming experience is helpful but not required: both novices and advanced students are welcome. |
